Fines for people who leave their county for non-essential reasons are being considered by the government.

A high-level officials group met this morning and the issue is under consideration, according to Taoiseach Micheál Marti.

Meanwhile, 132 Garda checkpoints are in place nationwide in response to the country moving to level three restrictions.

Motorists were stopped at early morning checkpoints nationwide including on major routes such as the N4, N11, and N7, causing major tailbacks. The checkpoints are part of operation Fanacht, which aims to encourage compliance with public health measures, and will include increased garda patrols.

Gardaí say there has been a noticeable drop in the number of cars on the roads today. They're warning people to expect delays over the coming weeks and to consider whether their journey is really essential.
