The family had been returning from a day in Derry.

A father and his two children who tragically lost their lives after their car skidded and plunged into a lake in Donegal, have been named locally.

John Mullan (49) and his children Thomas, aged 14, and Amelia, aged six, from Moville sadly died when their car entered the water at Quigleys Point on Lough Foyle at around twenty past ten, reports the Irish Times.

Their mother Geraldine Mullan (45) was also in the car, but survived the crash and raised the alarm, she is now being treated in hospital.

The family had been returning from a day trip to Derry.

Donegal TD Charlie McConalogue says it's an horrific situation.

''It's a terrible terrible situation to affect any family and for three people's lives to be lost is a terrible tragedy'', he said.

''Our thoughts and prayers go out to them''.

While Garda Supt Eugene McGovern of Buncrana Garda station said the loss of the family will devastate the local area.

“It is just difficult to find words for the families involved. Mr and Mrs Mullan’s families have been informed of the situation and that is why we are now releasing their names,” he said.

“This is an awful tragedy for the immediate families but also for the wider community as the family are well known and respected in the locality.”
