Almost 34,000 calls were made to services between March and August.
Over 4,000 women and children contacted a domestic abuse service for the first time during the pandemic.
New research from Safe Ireland has found almost 34,000 calls were made to services between March and August. On average every day between March and August, 19 women and 3 children contacted a domestic abuse service for the first time.
The pandemic is said to have exasperated the problem of domestic abuse as people were asked to stay in their homes. During this time 1,351 requests for refuge could not be met as there was no space.
The Safe Ireland report is critical of Government for continuously name-checking domestic violence as a priority but not providing the resources necessary to sufficiently address the problem.
