86% of dogs, given the option, choose to sleep close to their owners.

That's according to a new study from Dogs Trust, which also found that puppies sleep less at night than older dogs.

The findings show that puppies aged 16 weeks sleep for significantly longer than older dogs during the day. However, they sleep for less time at night.

The research says that once a dog reaches a year old, they are much more likely to sleep longer at night and match their owners sleep pattern.

Dogs Trust says that puppies should be tired out before going to bed and owners should create a night time routine.

The results are the part of the first phase of Generation Pup, a study which will follow dogs of all breeds throughout their lives.

It also uncovered that the most common sleeping position for a puppy is stretched out on their side.
