A man in his 40s remains in Garda custody.

Garda Horkan was shot dead with his own weapon after he lost possession of it during a physical altercation in Castlerea Co. Roscommon on Wednesday night.
A man in his 40s was arrested at the scene and remains in Garda custody.
Books of condolence have opened at Garda Stations across the country as funeral preparations are made.
Garda Horkan was a member of the Charlestown GAA club in his native Mayo and a close friend of his, Stephen Healy, paid tributes to his friend with Aidan and Oonagh this morning:

The man suspected of Garda Horkan's murder is known to gardaí for his erratic behaviour and has mental health issues.
He's under constant surveillance as he attempted to injure himself in custody.
