It follows a similar announcement from Pfizer last week.
A new Covid-19 vaccine from US company Moderna has shown almost 95% protection from the virus in trials.
The results follow similar results from Pfizer, and add to growing confidence that vaccines can help end the pandemic
Both companies used a highly innovative and experimental approach to designing their vaccines, the BBC reports.
Moderna says it is a "great day" and they plan to apply for approval to use the vaccine in the next few weeks.
Speaking this morning before the announcement, Professor of Immunology at Trinity College Dublin, Luke O'Neil says it's an amazing result.
''If they get the same level of efficacy, that's a great result because it means two completely different companies have gotten the same outcome'', he said.
''And it's independent of each other, which means the technology is reproducible which gives us even more hope then''.
