Ministers are meeting this afternoon.

New fines for people who breach the COVID regulations will be considered by cabinet Ministers this afternoon.

It comes after NPHET wrote to the Government last night to say they remain deeply concerned about the rising number of Covid-19 cases.

However, it did not recommend further restrictions following a meeting yesterday.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly gave an account of the decision making around rejecting NPHET's advice to move to level five restrictions.

Both he and the Taoiseach were aware before NPHET met of the possibility of moving to level four, but insist level five was not mentioned.

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly said CMO Dr Tony Holohan asked him to deliver a message to the Dáil.

''Just ask people to double down on this, we're at level three and we all know and accept that he wants to go to level five and I fully respect that'', he said.

''But given where we're at, we're at level three, just ask the nation to double down on level three''.

Yesterday, the Department of Health was notified of one further Covid-19-related death and 506 more cases.

It brings the number of Covid-19-related deaths to 1,817. There have now been 40,086 confirmed coronavirus cases in Ireland.
