Which places were unlucky to miss out?

Renowned travel website and magazine Condé Nast Traveller have named what they believe to be the 12 most beautiful small towns and villages in Ireland.

It's clear from the 12 locations chosen that the publication loves a bit of traditional Irish charm, and for good reason.

In all there are 10 counties represented in the list, with Co. Cork the only one to register two places.

Here are the 12 that made the cut:

  • Roundstone, Co. Galway
  • Westport, Co. Mayo
  • Birr, Co. Offaly
  • Kinsale, Co. Cork
  • Inistioge, Co. Kilkenny
  • Doolin, Co. Clare
  • Adare, Co. Limerick
  • Baltimore, Co. Cork
  • Dalkey, Co. Dublin
  • Dingle, Co. Kerry
  • Cashel, Co. Tipperary
  • Dunmore East, Co. Waterford

"Ireland's beautiful villages and small towns, with their clusters of whitewashed cottages, mossy churchyards and low-rafter pubs that still sell groceries along with a pint of stout, are living time capsules of the past," the travel company writes.

"Some have only a single street lined with neat rows of slate roofs, rich lime render and solid sash windows, where locals gather in pubs that have had the same family names hanging over their half-doors for generations.

"As remarkable for their setting as their character, they are often discovered around the bend of a road over a high plain or at the foot of a hilly lane, shimmering against the ocean after a summer shower or in the folds of a valley."
