There have been calls to replace the memorial of Columbus in Galway City.

A Christopher Columbus statue has been pulled down, set on fire, and thrown into a lake in the US.

Protesters removed the monument in Virginia, while a statue of the explorer was also beheaded in Boston overnight.

In Ireland, there have been calls to replace the memorial of Columbus in Galway with something which pays respect to victims of slavery.

Speaking during an interview on 2fm today, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said: "We have a few of our own statues we may need to take down. There is a statue in Fairview Park in Dublin of an Irish republican man who was also a Nazi collaborator... I think any statues that come down should come down legally... let's not engage in violence."

Mr Varadkar also said that as a mixed race person growing up in Ireland, he has experienced racism.
