Red, orange, yellow and blue.

Health officials are planning to roll out a new colour-coded system based on the status of the virus in each part of the country.

The system has been formulated by the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) and is set to be implemented in the near future.

The colour-coded system will be used to assess if restrictions need to be re-imposed in some counties, similar to the measures currently in place in Kildare, Laois and Offaly.

Speaking today, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly explained how the new system would work.

''What we would be looking at now for example would be that Laois, Kildare and Offaly would be in status orange'', he said.

''So the four are yellow, which is where the rest of the country is now.

''Orange which is a heightened state.

''Red which is what we all lived through when we were spending a lot of time in our houses.

''And then blue is when there's a vaccine''.

Given that a viable and safe vaccine is not yet readily available, the Health Minister said that it’s “entirely possible” for further localised restrictions being brought in to deal with a rise in cases in the future.
