More than 6,000 Irish students took part in the new study.
One in three female students say they experienced sex without consent in college.
More than 6,000 students from across the country took part in the study. The Sexual Experiences survey found that just 3% of students who were sexually assaulted in college lodged a complaint with Gardaí.
The research also found that one in 10 males and three in 10 non-binary students also report having been sexually assaulted. Almost half of males, a third of females and a quarter of non-binary students also never reported the incident.
It's the first time research like this has been carried out here for seven years.
Dr Padraig Mac Neela from NUIG is the author of the report. He outlines a worrying trend of students not even telling family or friends they were sexually assaulted.
He explains:
"A lot of people who chose not to disclose, so for example 40% of year one students, would have had this experience over the past six months and they hadn't disclosed that to anybody before actually taking the survey".
Consent classes have been taking place across college campuses over the past couple of years - which the Union of Student in Ireland say is a great addition and has caused positive change.
6,000 students across the country took part in the study which was carried out between February and April of this year.
