Hero!
A teenager in Meath is being praised for assisting two young boys who'd gotten into difficulty while swimming in the Boyne River in Navan on Wednesday evening.
16-year-old Callum Keane was walking alongside the river when he heard a cry for help at around 7pm.
A boy had become tangled in some reads and his friend was attempting to help him. That's when Callum sprung into action and swam across the river and assisted the child to shore, RTE reports.
The two young boys, aged 11 and 12, were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, but its understood they haven't sustained any serious injuries.
Speaking to RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, a humble Callum explained what happened.
"I just didn't think and jumped into the river and swam towards him'', he said.
''The current was so strong, I don't know how he wasn't washed away as I was struggling against it. I got to him and dragged him towards the bank".
“My phone’s been hopping all night and all day,” he added.
Christopher Rennicks of Meath River Rescue said: "When I heard of a few boys in difficulty, I raced down and met Callum walking back up the road after possibly saving that young boy's life.
"The ambulance and Gardaí had arrived on the scene and taken the two boys to hospital to be checked out."
"I brought Callum home to his parents but he was playing his part down no end. That part of the river, behind the former Blackcastle Mansion has a seriously dangerous current which could have proved to be fatal," he added.
"Callum doesn't realise it but he is a hero for leaping into that current to help a young boy," he concluded.
