The temperature in part of California has hit 54-point-4 degrees, in what could be the hottest reading ever reliably taken on Earth.
An automated station for the US National Weather Service in Death Valley recorded the absolute scorcher yesterday afternoon.
The record comes amid a heatwave on the US's west coast, where temperatures are forecast to rise further this week.

In 1913, the same area registered a high of 56-point-6, but the accuracy of that has been disputed by experts.
