Price of cigarettes, petrol and diesel set to increase in Budget

A multi-billion euro fund to help businesses is also set to be announced.

The carbon tax is set to increase which will lead to a rise in the cost of petrol and diesel, when the Budget for 2021 is announced later today.

The cost of a packet of cigarettes could increase by up to 50 cent while it’s believed alcohol will remain untouched, and motor tax and VRT are also set to rise for high polluting vehicles.

A multi-billion euro fund is also set to be announced this afternoon to help businesses, which have been forced to shut because of the crisis.

While health is to get an extra 4 billion euro while there’s set to be a large investment in social housing.

Public Expenditure Minister Michael McGrath feels people will see the Government has done its best with the numbers.

''I'm looking forward to the day and I think that at the end of it people will see that the government really has done its best in extraordinarily difficult circumstances'', he said.

''And I think that will people will understand that we are aiming to give confidence and hope that we'll get through this period''.
