The 1939 movie topped a list of 47,000 films.
A study has found that The Wizard of Oz is the most influential film of all time.
The musical, which is almost 80 years old, stars Judy Garland as Dorothy, a girl who is swept away by a tornado to a land of witches and talking scarecrows.
Researchers at the University of Turin in Italy analysed 47,000 films listed in the internet movie database (IMDb).
They calculated how often each movie was referenced by later films, and The Wizard of Oz came out on top.
Star Wars (1977) was named the second most influential movie of all time, followed by Psycho (1960), King Kong (1933), and 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).
The results showed that the top 20 most influential films were all made before 1980 and mostly in the US.
The researchers also applied the algorithm to actors and found that Samuel L Jackson, Clint Eastwood and Tom Cruise were the top three most influential stars.
