The statue will be erected in Dublin's north inner city centre.

Iconic singer Luke Kelly will now hold a permanent place in the Irish landscape, when a statue of the famous Dubliner is erected in the city's inner north.

The celebrated singer from the Dubliners, who passed away in 1984, will have his statue unveiled on Guild Street in early 2019.

Kelly was supposed to have been honoured with a bronze statue back in 2004 - but plans were but on hold because the Dublin Docklands Authority didn't have the funds.

However, Cllr Christy Burke has announced on Facebook that Kelly will now be immortalised in the capital:

"Some brilliant news, not only for Sheriff Street area but all the Luke Kelly fans throughout the world. After putting in a motion with the DCC and working with Luke's family, Luke's statue will be erected on the 30th of January on Guild Street. Time is to be announced," Burke said.

"This is defiantly (sic) one of the proudest moments in my political career and I would sincerely like to thank Luke's family and all my fellow councillors for their support. He will surely be very proud today. Luke was a close friend for my years and today has brought a tear to my eye."

Great news!
