What have you been putting on the long finger?

The whole country is getting to grips with social distancing and self-isolation. If you're off school, college or work for a few weeks or maybe spending the next few weekends at home, here are seven things you can do to keep the boredom at bay:

1. Finally do something with *that* room

You know the one. Everyone has that one room whose sole function is to store all of the crap that you can't fit or no longer need anywhere else in the house but you don't want to throw things away "just incase". Get real. If you haven't used that foot spa in the last 12 months, chances are you never will. In a few weeks time, you could have that room cleared out and even painted. The possibilities are endless.

2. Learn a new recipe

Always wanted to master a spaghetti carbonara? Maybe you want to perfect a Sunday roast dinner? Now's the perfect time to hone in on those skills. Find a recipe online that you'd like to muster and get cracking. You'll be hosting lavish dinner parties (or even just impressing your college housemates) by the end of the outbreak.

3. Do a wardrobe clear-out

When's the last time you had a proper root through that wardrobe of yours? The next few weeks is the perfect opportunity to finally tackle that situ. Pop anything you haven't worn in the last year into black bags and if things need altering or adjusting, make a note to do that when normality resumes. Good quality clothes that you no longer want can be put aside and dropped off to charity shops when they reopen.

4. Have an at-home 'spa day'

It'll be another while before services like beauticians open up so why not bring the beauty salon to your sitting room? You probably have some body lotions and face masks lying around from gift sets you got over Christmas. Dig them out, lash on a fresh coat of nail varnish and put the feet up for an evening. You deserve it.

5. Learn how to play that instrument that's lying about the house

Whether it's the tin whistle you have in the house since 3rd class or that banjo you bought on a whim last summer, there may be an instrument lying around that hasn't seen the light of day in a while. Dust it down and focus on mastering it over the next while. You'll find plenty of tutorials on YouTube to get you started!

6. Clear out your phone

You know those screenshots and memes that're clogging up your phone storage? Maybe now's the time to do a proper clear-out. Dedicate an hour or so to the job and delete all the ones you no longer need. You can also do the same for unused apps, messages and emails. Your phone storage (and your head) will be all the better for it.

7. Learn a new language

Always wanted to be fluent in Spanish? Maybe you always fancied polishing up your cúpla focal? Well what're you waiting for? Thousands of people are brushing up on their language skills through apps like Duolingo. It's free to download and provides short, fun 'lessons' in over 30 languages so you've no excuse.
