They've now launched disciplinary proceedings.
Organisers of the Oscars have begun disciplinary proceedings against Will Smith, after revealing they asked him to leave Sunday's ceremony but he refused.
It's after he slapped Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife, Jada.
There's been much debate around why the actor was allowed to remain in his seat after the incident.
Sky News reports that the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has released a statement saying:
"Things unfolded in a way we could not have anticipated".
"While we would like to clarify that Mr Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognise we could have handled the situation differently."
The Academy has now begun disciplinary proceedings against the actor for violating their standards of conduct. Will Smith can defend himself in writing to the group before April 18th.
In their statement, the Academy also apologised to Chris Rock for what unfolded:
"Mr Smith's actions at the 94th Oscars were a deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in-person and on television."
"Mr. Rock, we apologise to you for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience in that moment. We also apologise to our nominees, guests, and viewers for what transpired during what should have been a celebratory event."
Comedian Chris Rock was back on tour last night, and said he's 'still processing' it all.
