He suffered a stroke at his home in LA last week.
He was taken to hospital on Wednesday in Los Angeles, where he had been shooting scenes for Riverdale according to BBC.
The actor was best known for his roles in Beverly Hills, 90210 and Riverdale.
The star's publicist, Arnold Robinson, says he was surrounded by his fiancée, children and other family and friends when he passed away earlier.
"The family appreciates the outpouring of support and prayers that have been extended to Luke from around the world, and respectfully request privacy in this time of great mourning," Mr Robinson said.
