The music stars were presented with the Vanguard Award at the GLAAD Media Award ceremony on Thursday night.

In their acceptance speech Jay-Z thanked the organisation for honouring his mother Gloria at last year's ceremony, as she had come out late in life.

"I get to follow in her footsteps, spreading love and acceptance...so I want everyone to acknowledge that," he said.

Beyoncé then said she wanted to dedicate the award to her late uncle Johnny who was gay and died of HIV:

"He lived his truth and he was brave and unapologetic during a time when this country wasn't as accepting...I'm hopeful that his struggle served to open pathways for other young people to live more freely. LGBTQI rights are human rights."
