The government is facing renewed pressure to introduce an annual winter eviction ban.
Tánaiste Micheál Martin says the government does not intend to reintroduce the ban over the coming months – despite homelessness reaching another record high.
Almost 13,000 people were in emergency accommodation last month. Unfortunately, nearly 4,000 of them were children.
This is the fifth consecutive month figures have grown.
The number of people living in emergency accommodation, such as homeless hostels, family hubs, hotel rooms or bed and breakfasts, increased by 247 people in July. June’s figure was recorded at 12,600.
The Department of Housing figures show an increase in homelessness across all cohorts.
More children, families and single adults are becoming homeless every month.
Social Democrats’ Housing Spokesperson, Cian O’Callaghan says we’re falling way behind our European neighbours when it comes to protecting tenants.
Simon Communities of Ireland: 3,829 children will be starting back to school in the coming weeks from a homeless service. That is simply shameful.
