Despite this decline, the price of groceries is still increasing
Annual grocery price inflation has dropped for the third month in row.
New research by Kantar shows inflation rates stood at 12.8% in August 2023, down almost 2 per cent from the previous month.
Despite this decline, the price of groceries is still increasing.
Pricewatch editor with the Irish Times, Conor Pope, says it’s being reflected in people’s trolleys as shoppers reach for cheaper, own-brand products:
“You’ve seen an ever greater push towards own brand shopping and I don’t mean just own brand shopping with Lidl and Aldi because Tesco have a good own brand range, Dunnes and Supervalu have an own brand range.”
He continues, “When I was writing about this in 2008/2009 around 8% of the typical Irish shopping basket was made up of own brand products, today it’s around 50%.”
