It comes after a series of attacks on Gardaí in recent weeks

Gardaí are finally set to be issued with body cameras at the end of this year.

The Irish Mail on Sunday reports a pilot scheme will be rolled out in December.

It comes in the wake of a series of high-profile attacks on Gardaí in recent weeks.

Antoinette Cunningham, General Secretary of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors, says frontline workers need to be protected:

“I mean the AGSI have been calling for some time for the introduction of body worn cameras”

Ms Cunningham welcomes that the move is being brought forward as they only called last week for the legislation to be issued quicker.

“We do see it as an additional form of personal protection equipment, particularly lately given the number of assaults on our members.

“Anything that can be done to speed up the process of the introduction of body worn cameras we certainly welcome.”
