Four in five Covid deaths had at least three medical conditions mentioned on death record

Pneumonia was an accompanying condition in more than half of Coronavirus deaths.

CSO figures show that four in five deaths from the virus had at least three medical conditions on the death record.

Between March 2020 and February 2022, Covid-19 was identified as the underlying cause of death in 5,384 cases.

The largest number of accompanying conditions were diseases of the respiratory system, which were reported in 98% of those deaths.

Pneumonia was certified as a condition in more than half of the cases or 56 per cent.

Four in five deaths from the disease had at least three medical conditions mentioned on the death record.

A total of 183 deaths or 3.4% reported Covid-19 as the single cause of death.

91% of Covid-19 deaths occurred in persons aged 65 and over.
