Covid-19 restrictions extended until May 18th, Taoiseach announces

Leo Varadkar has announced that Covid-19 restrictions in Ireland will be extended until May 18th.

In an address to the nation, the Taoiseach said: ''We have a plan to ease restrictions from 18 May but we need two more weeks of strict restrictions so it does not make a comeback''.

In the short term, the non-essential travel limited has been extended to 5km from 2km and those over 70 who are cocooning can exercise or go for a drive 5km from their homes if they avoid contact with others.

Speaking about the restrictions to date, Mr Varadkar said, ''It has been worthwhile, it is working so let's finish what we started. 77% of people diagnosed with Covid-19 have now made a full recovery''.

The easing of restrictions.

The Taoiseach said there is a 5 stage plan to ease restrictions from the 18th of May.

After that date, outdoor work can start and garden centres, hardware stores and repair shops will reopen.

Some outdoor sporting fitness activities will be allowed and it will be possible to meet small groups outdoors.

While schools and colleges will reopen in September or October.

He said he hopes stage 5, the final stage, will begin August 10th which is 101 days from now.
