Safefood says there is no evidence the virus can be transmitted on food packaging.
Food shopping doesn't need to be disinfected after it's unpacked, according to public body Safefood.
Last month saw the biggest amount of grocery sales ever recorded - with households spending an extra €122 million on groceries.
Safefood says that there is no evidence that the virus can be transmitted on food packaging.
Dr Linda Gordon, Chief Specialist in Microbiology with Safefood, says people should wash their hands instead.
''The risk of transmission through food packaging is very low, so therefore it's not necessary to disinfect all of your food when you bring it home from the supermarket'', she said.
''The risk can be managed best by washing your hands be leaving house and observing safe hygiene while in supermarket''.
''And by washing your hands again as soon as get home and again after you've unpacked your shop''.
