The Dáil is debating the government's response to the virus this afternoon.

The Taoiseach has said he doesn't know if Coronavirus restrictions will be lifted on May 5th and warned normal life will not fully return in Ireland until there is a vaccine for COVID-19.

The Dáil is debating the government's response to the virus this afternoon.

At the start of business Leo Varadkar warned measures may be extended beyond the current timeline:

''I don't yet know if we'll be able to relax restrictions on the 5th of May'', he said.

''But I do know that if we can at all it's going to be gradual and will happen over a number of months.

''As we know from Asia they may even need to be reimposed again, because only a scientific breakthrough, a vaccine or effective anti-viral medicine will truly allow life to go back to being as it was''.

The current restrictions (in place until May 5th) state people are to remain in their homes, except for the following reasons:

  • To go to work.
  • To get essential goods.
  • To attend medical appointments.
  • Vital family reasons like caring for children/elderly.
  • For exercise.

While:

  • All public and private gatherings outside of a single household will be prohibited.
  • Travel outside a 2km radius is banned (aside from the above listed reasons).
