The Taoiseach made an announcement this afternoon.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has confirmed today that it's safe to move onto Phase Two of easing the Covid-19 restrictions from Monday. The roadmap will also be accelerated and there will now be four stages, rather than the inital five. Phase Three is set to be implemented on June 29th while the fourth and final phase will come into effect on July 20th.

Here's what you will be able to do from Monday 8th June:

  • People can travel anywhere within their own county or 20km from their homes, whichever is greater
  • Groups of up to 6 people can meet indoors or outdoors once they keep a 2-metre social distance
  • Groups of up to 15 people can meet for outdoor sporting activities, once they comply with social distancing
  • Over 70s and the vulnerable can welcome people to their homes, but maintain social distancing
  • Public libraries can open
  • All shops can reopen
  • Up to 25 people can attend funerals
  • Playgrounds, once supervised, can reopen
  • Summer camps can also be held if they can ensure that no more than 15 people are mixing together
  • There will be a special education programme for children with special needs
  • Athletes can return to training

Here's what else can reopen during the month of June:

  • Shopping centres won't be open from this Monday but they will be able to reopen from 15th June. However, they have to ensure that there will be no congregating at areas like food courts.
  • The tourism and hospitality sectors will return on June 29th. Bars and pubs can also reopen on this date if they serve food and have table service.
  • Place of worship can resume services from June 29th.
  • All domestic restrictions on movement are set to be lifted at the end of this month.
