It's one of the highest rates of diagnosed healthcare worker infection in Europe.

One in 10 Covid-19 cases in Ireland are nurses, according to the Irish Nurses & Midwives Organisation (INMO).

The INMO says the country faces one of the highest rates of diagnosed healthcare worker infection in Europe.

Nurses are calling for updated guidance on PPE, and more detailed statistics on healthcare infection rates.

The organisation also wants to see a breakdown of where the infection is occurring.

In a letter to the head of the HSE Paul Reid on Thursday, INMO general secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha said there should also be “a full audit of available domestic supplies (of personal protective equipment) from all possible sources and the distribution of same must be undertaken as a matter of urgency”.

“We have several reports from members that they have been able to procure and supply personal protective equipment from domestic suppliers.

“One example is this afternoon: a large acute hospital was told that their supplies of personal protective equipment would not last the night shift.

“One nurse then contacted a local supplier and secured 2,000 masks which were delivered to the hospital. It is simply not acceptable that staff in the frontline have to secure their own protective equipment”.
