The National Public Health Emergency Team is meeting today.

The National Public Health Emergency Team is meeting today (Friday April 3rd) to discuss extending the movement restrictions, which are currently in place until April 12th.

Issues around the testing backlog, protecting staff and patients in nursing homes, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers, and what more can be done to slow the spread of the virus will be on the agenda.

Chief medical officer Tony Holohan said certain steps need to be taken before any measures are lifted.

''Until we have a strong public health response consisting of case detection contact tracing and testing and isolation and quarantine verifiably in place, we won't be able to recommend lifting these measures'', he said.

''And we're working hard to make sure that we have that''.

The death toll from the virus in the Republic now stands at 98, while the total number of confirmed cases is 3,849.

While 148 people had been admitted to Intensive Care Units after testing positive, as of Tuesday night.
