More than 7,500 frontline workers have contracted the virus to date.

SIPTU wants healthcare workers who’ve contracted Covid-19 to be financially compensated.

Up to a third of confirmed cases involve those on the frontline and more than 7,500 frontline workers have contracted Coronavirus to date. Seven of them have lost their lives.

There are now calls for these workers who’ve been affected to be financially compensated for loss of earnings and counselling. There are particular concerns about those who responded to the Be On Call For Ireland initiative.

SIptus Paul Bell says many of those have ended up in the private sector instead of the public.

"If I'm answering Ireland's call in a national emergency, my assumption would be I'm going to work for the country, I'm going to work for the state", he explained.

"I am not going to work  for an agency and I'm not going to be disregarded".

The Health Minister Simon Harris says he’s willing to look into it He also added that he needs to discuss the future of Covid-19 with unions as frontline workers may have to cope with the virus coming in waves for some time.
