Taoiseach Leo Varadkar hasn't ruled out the possibility of more fruit-pickers arriving in Ireland.

Last week, there was significant public upset after Keelings Fruits brought almost 200 workers here from Bulgaria. They flew 189 workers to Ireland last week to pick their crops and in a statement on Thursday evening, Keelings said it was essential to fly in workers in order to make sure ripe fruit was picked in time and ensure there were no food shortages.

Agriculture workers are classed as essential under the current restrictions, to ensure there's enough food to eat.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar today admitted that he hadn't anticipated the current scenario. He now says the plan is to work with the sector to see if the jobs can be filled by Irish people or people who already live here.

He added that:

"If not, then we have to make a decision Do we allow the crop to fail? Or do we allow workers to continue to come in from other parts of the European Union?"

If workers were allowed to continue to come here, the Taoiseach added there would be very stringent quarantine measures imposed.
