''I think those things will be the last to return.''

A healthcare expert based in the US has warned mass gatherings such as festivals or concerts may not resume for another 18 months.

Zeke Emanuel, a bioethicist and professor of healthcare management from Chicago, has questioned why promoters were trying to reschedule events for later in 2020, while speaking to the New York Times.

''Larger gatherings – conferences, concerts, sporting events – when people say they’re going to reschedule this conference or graduation event for October 2020, I have no idea how they think that’s a plausible possibility, Professor Emanuel said.

''I think those things will be the last to return. Realistically we’re talking fall (Autumn) 2021 at the earliest''.

23,500 people have died from Covid-19 in the United States while there are currently 587,337 active confirmed cases, the most in any country in the world.

Ireland's major festivals including Electric Picnic and Body & Soul are yet to announce their plans regarding the Covid-19 pandemic.
