''It's been very striking people haven't been very keen to wear them''.
Face coverings are to be made compulsory on public transport, as capacity on buses and trains is to be increased from Monday.
The Transport Minister says it will be an offence not to wear a mask, with Cabinet to consider the idea at its meeting this afternoon.
Shane Ross believes making masks mandatory is the sensible thing to do.
''Personally I've been disappointed, it's been very striking people haven't been very keen to wear them.
''It's really one of the reasons we have to make it mandatory.
''Bus driver unions and transport unions have all called for it recently as well, I think it's an essential thing to do but it's got to be enforced now''.
The National Bus and Rail Union has welcomed the proposal and believe Gardaí should be deployed to enforce it.
