16 deaths and 370 new cases of Covid-19 confirmed in Ireland

174 people have now died in the pandemic in the Republic.

A further sixteen people have lost their lives due to Covid-19 in Ireland today, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan has confirmed.

The total number of fatalities in the country since the pandemic began is now to 174.

Of today's deaths, six were females and 10 males, 11 were from the east four in the north-west, and one in the west - the median age of those who died was 78,and four of the victims had underlying health conditions.

Meanwhile an additional 370 people were diagnosed with the virus, meaning 5,364 cases are now confirmed in Republic.

1,263 of cases (26%) are associated with healthcare workers.

Dublin has the highest number of cases at 2,692 (55% of all cases) followed by Cork with 362 cases (7%)

Of those for whom transmission status is known: community transmission accounts for 65%, close contact accounts for 23%, travel abroad accounts for 12%

Earlier today HSE stated its intention to increase the amount of daily tests to 4,500 a day.

Easter weekend.

Ahead of the expected good weather this Easter weekend, Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said people should continue to adhere to the hygiene and social distancing measures in place.

He said people should stay at home next weekend and, if they have second homes, not to travel to them.
