Applications are open to young people looking to 'adopt' a grandparent
A care home has launched a new campaign called ‘Adopt a Grandparent’ in an attempt to tackle loneliness during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The team at CHD Living in Surrey launched the scheme last year but are now going digital as to follow social distancing advice.
While social distancing is helping stop the spread of Coronavirus, it can cause many elderly people living on their own to feel lonely.
The care home is matching young people with their elderly residents to "bring a sense of comfort to young people and the elderly who may not have grandparents/grandchildren of their own, with the aim to create invaluable, lifelong friendships".
Volunteers are asked to video call the resident they've have been match up with regularly. The goal is to provide mental stimulation and remote companionship.
Head of Communications and Commissioning at CHD Living, Shaleeza Hasham said:"The nature of care means that we’re looking after some of the most vulnerable members of society at the moment.
"It’s a worrying time and we’re taking the threat of coronavirus incredibly seriously, putting stringent processes and protocols in place to protect our residents as much as possible
"We are however keen to keep spirits in the homes high and so have been thinking of ways that we can continue to enrich the lives of our residents whilst providing them with stimulation and companionship."
The Mirror reports claim that in March so far, the scheme had 36 new volunteers enrolled and is still search more young people to get involved.
